So many LED tubes...but not all are the same...

There has been much debate over this recently, especially among electrical contractors. Rightfully so. LEDs promise to be more energy efficient, less harmful to the earth and more economical in the longrun than traditional fluorescent tubes. Yet there are many experts who think the technology isn’t ready for “prime time.” LED tubes are more expensive up front and improvements still need to be made in the strength of the lighting.
What do you think? Have you used LED tubes as a replacement for fluorescents? Do you think they will take the spot of fluorescents in the future? Voice your opinion by taking the survey at: Are LED Fluorescent Tubes Ready for Prime Time?

    1. LED lights are definately the wave of the future and will help our economy a great deal. Thanks for your nice column! st. paul lighting gal.

    2. I live in Sweden, where energy is atleast twice as expensive than it is in the US, if my sources are correct. I have invested in LED lights and expect to get a return on my investment within 12 months already.

    3. Carl says:

We’ve had these installed everywhere at work and I must they are suprisingly good; sufficiently bright and they don’t buzz like the old fluorescents. I just wish they had diffusers because the individual leds create a wierd banding effect which is my only complaint.

    4. lzdl says:

Totally agree. I am marketing this kind of LED Tubes. But frankly speaking, I am not sure whether it’s marketable or not. Although LEDs are claimed to be alive for 50,000 hours, their are many other bottlenecks inside, such as power driver, PC shade, which discounts the lifespan. On the cost side, it’s much expensive than typical ones, the total cost is much higher even it’s energy saving. So currently the energy saving tips is replacing T12 with T8, and magnetic ballasts with electronic ones which cuts more bill. LED ones suit for a pure low-carbonist or volunteer,

Thanks for this great info. We find that as businesses embrace energy efficient lighting, consumer demand then follows. Not aware of any particular studies of this, but this is our experience. Great blog.

    6. Yes – I think that LED’s will take the place of florescent. Actually we have recently started implementing LED lighting into our designs and have been able to create some really amazing interiors with the color changing LED lighting. If you want to see some amazing examples of how LED’s can be implemented you should view the photos on the I-5 Design & Manufacture website.

Actually, i think currently LED lighting is more suitable for supermarket, mall, commercial application, as the more LED lighting is used, the more electricity bill is saved. On the contrast, when used in residence by small quanities, it really not deserve. But, if take environment-protection into consideration, it’s another case. Since all know that LED is 100% eco-friendly while others kinds of lamps will harm our earth more or less.

    18. Led lighting will get cheaper as more people adopt the technology, also the lighting will become softer and more natural in time with the advent of quantum dot technology. I agree though LED lighting still has some way to come.

    19. Fire Fly says:

The lifecycle of LED bulbs entirely depends upon its manufacturing process and it can go up to a million hours, when matched with the other compact fluorescent lamps and incandescent bulbs. LED’s by nature emits light in a very small band of wavelength and creates a strong colored light. LED bulbs even improve the energy efficiency and generate numerous colors of light. A light emitting diode is generally a semiconductor light source.
